Thrilling Homecoming Showdown: Women’s Soccer Takes on No. 9 Washington & Lee!

Lynchburg, Va. – The University of Lynchburg women’s soccer team is gearing up for an important match against No. 9 Washington & Lee on Saturday, October 18, at 5:00 p.m. This game follows a couple of tough losses, and it’s a great chance for the Hornets to bounce back during Homecoming weekend.

Historically, Lynchburg leads the series with 21 wins, 8 losses, and 6 draws. However, they’ve recently lost two matches against the Generals. Since 1999, Lynchburg has never lost three games in a row to this rival.

Currently, the Hornets are in seventh place in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC), with four conference games left this season. They’ll be playing three of those at home, including a special game on October 25 for Homecoming and Senior Day against Bridgewater.

In their last matches, the Hornets have struggled offensively, managing only one goal in the last three games. Morgan Oliver stands out with eight goals and five assists. After a tough 1-0 loss to Shenandoah, where they conceded the only goal in the final minute, this match is crucial for Lynchburg’s morale.

On the other side, Washington & Lee boasts an impressive 11-2-1 record, remaining unbeaten in ODAC play with a 7-0 mark. They’ve been dominant, winning their last seven games and outscoring conference opponents 30-1. In a recent road win against Randolph-Macon, the Generals showcased their strength, enjoying a 25-5 shot advantage.

Key players for W&L include sisters Sarah and Megan Zimmerman, both scoring five goals this season. Additionally, goalkeeper Kate McEnroe leads the conference with a 0.41 goals-against average (GAA), further solidifying their tough defense.

Last season, W&L had a record of 20-2-1 and made it to the NCAA Third Round, underscoring their strong program history. Recent statistics show that only No. 12 Swarthmore and No. 1 Emory managed to beat the Generals, both by a narrow 1-0 margin.

Before the women’s soccer game, Lynchburg will host a field hockey matchup against Bridgewater at 11:00 a.m. The men’s soccer team will face Eastern Mennonite at 2:00 p.m. Homecoming festivities kick off at 11:00 a.m. with tailgates in the parking lot near Hopwood Hall.
