SOUTH CHARLESTON – The University High School softball team faces a big challenge on Saturday as they strive to defend their state title. On Friday, they battled Cabell Midland but lost 6-5 in a close match.

Cabell Midland took the lead early, scoring three runs in the second inning. The first run came from a defensive error, followed by singles from Nicole Harris and Becca Conrad that brought in two more runs.

University made a push in the fourth inning. Lexi Elza’s sacrifice bunt led to a throwing error, scoring their first run. Adalyn Brown added another with a successful bunt, narrowing Cabell Midland’s lead to 3-2.

Cabell Midland extended their lead in the fourth with an RBI double from Baylee Smith. University kept fighting back. In the fifth, Masoner’s sacrifice fly brought in Kelsey Park, who had started the inning with a thrilling triple.

In the sixth, the game turned. University struggled defensively, resulting in two costly errors. One error on an infield single allowed Cabell Midland to score two more runs, pushing their lead to 6-3.

But University wasn’t finished. In a dramatic top of the seventh, Kelsey Park walked to lead off. Then, Maddie Campbell hit a towering home run, cutting the deficit to one run and adding fire to the final moments.

However, Cabell Midland’s pitcher, Audrea Watts, stepped up. She struck out the last batter with bases loaded, clinching the win for her team. Earlier in the day, she had pitched a no-hitter against St. Albans, showcasing her impressive skills.

University will now face Jefferson in an elimination game on Saturday morning. They need to win this match and then defeat Cabell Midland twice to capture the state title.
