GREENSBORO – Last night at First National Bank Field, the North Carolina A&T baseball team faced a tough loss against rival UNC Greensboro, ending the game with a score of 13-1. It’s been a rough start to the season for the Aggies, who are now 2-12 and have lost five in a row. Meanwhile, the Spartans improved their record to 5-8, winning two out of three games against A&T this season.
Junior Marcus Bradshaw stood out by going 2-for-4 and scoring the Aggies’ only run. The game started with excitement as UNCG scored first in the top of the first inning. A&T quickly responded when Bradshaw hit a single, and a misthrow from UNCG’s third baseman allowed him to reach home, tying the game at 1-1.
Things changed dramatically after that. A&T’s sophomore pitcher, Braxton Davis, struggled and was replaced by freshman Josh Hauser after walking the first batter of the second inning. Unfortunately, the Spartans took advantage. A single from Ethan Brittain brought in another run, and an error by the Aggies later allowed Brittain to score again, making it 3-1.
UNCG continued to pile on runs, increasing the lead to 5-1 by the fourth inning. They scored two more runs in the fifth and four more in the sixth, closing out the game early after seven innings.
UNCG’s pitcher, Isaac Miles, had a solid performance, allowing just one run across five innings with four strikeouts. Dilley was a key player for the Spartans, hitting 2-for-3 with four RBIs.
Next up for the Aggies is their Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) opener. They’re set to face the Elon Phoenix this Friday, with the first game kicking off at 6 p.m. at Elon’s Latham Park. The series includes two more games on Saturday and Sunday.
As the season progresses, keeping an eye on player development is crucial. According to recent statistics, young players like Davis and Hauser could greatly impact the Aggies’ performance this season if they continue to build on their experiences. So, while last night’s loss was painful, it might serve as a wake-up call for the team to regroup and find their stride.
