JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The Panthers had chances to shine, but mistakes cost them dearly in their opening game against the Jaguars, ending in a 26-10 defeat.
After an offseason focused on building offensive momentum, things went sideways for rookie quarterback Bryce Young. He struggled in the first half, throwing an interception and fumbling the ball, both leading to points for Jacksonville. A promising start to the second half faltered as a fourth-and-1 pass sailed out of bounds with no one to catch it.
Young’s frustration was palpable; he slammed his helmet on the bench. It wasn’t just him. The entire team faced challenges throughout the game.
Dropped passes and untimely penalties halted drives, including one penalty for being an ineligible man downfield on center Austin Corbett. This loss raised tough questions for the Panthers as they look to bounce back in the coming weeks. Interestingly, historically teams that start the season with such defeats often take time to recover. According to a recent report by the NFL, around 65% of teams losing their opening game struggle to secure a playoff spot. It’s a pattern the Panthers will be keen to break this season.
