University High and Madison Prep faced off in a thrilling football game at Jeff Boss Stadium, with University High emerging victorious, 32–30. This matchup marked their second clash in a month, the first being a 14–8 win for the Cubs back in October when they secured the District 6-3A title.
The game was packed with action, but the turning point came in the final moments. With Madison Prep trailing by two points, quarterback Dillon Reed fought for extra yards but lost the ball. University’s Lamar Brown made a crucial play, recovering the fumble and sealing the win for the Cubs. “Both teams left it all on the field. It was just a great game,” said University coach Andy Martin.
Madison Prep took an early lead on its second drive, going 69 yards in 12 plays, ending with a 1-yard touchdown run by Landon Johnson. After successfully converting a two-point attempt, they were ahead 8–0. However, University responded quickly with back-to-back touchdowns, including a 67-yard pass from Ethan McGlynn to Lawson Dixon, narrowing the score to 8–6.
Another significant moment for University was a fumble recovery in the end zone by Lamar Brown, putting the Cubs ahead 12–8. This led to a back-and-forth battle, with Madison Prep regaining the lead through Harlem Turner’s impressive 64-yard touchdown run. Turner finished the game with 155 rushing yards.
Sage Ingram shone for University, racking up 147 yards and scoring twice, including a crucial 46-yard touchdown run following a penalty against Madison Prep. Kicker Mason Melancon also contributed, adding a 27-yard field goal that gave University a 22–16 halftime edge.
In the second half, the game’s intensity didn’t wane. Madison Prep marched down the field to regain the lead 24–22, thanks to another swift scoring effort featuring J’on Profit. Yet, University fought back, with Melancon’s field goal giving them a slight edge once again. Ingram’s 40-yard touchdown run later solidified their lead at 32–24.
Even with a late surge from Madison Prep, including a thrilling 63-yard run by Reed, they fell just short as a two-point conversion attempt failed. “You can’t have these mental mistakes and expect to advance,” said Madison Prep coach Landry Williams. “Penalties at crucial moments can cost you games.”
This match showcased the fierce competition and unwavering spirit of both teams, despite Madison Prep finishing their season at 9–3. With this win, University High (10–2) will continue their journey, facing St. Charles Catholic next week in LaPlace.
