Grand Canyon’s Impressive Victory Against Utah
PALM DESERT, Calif. – Grand Canyon University (GCU) pulled off a remarkable win against Utah, triumphing 68-58. This marked the first time in GCU’s Division I history that the team won without making a 3-pointer. The Lopes controlled the game through strong defensive plays and effective ball handling.
In front of an enthusiastic crowd at Acrisure Arena, GCU improved to 4-2 and is set to face Iowa (now 6-0) in the tournament finals. The Lopes managed to outhustle Utah in rebounds and turnovers. They grabbed two more offensive boards than the Utes and committed eight fewer turnovers, giving them an extra ten possessions.
A key figure in the game was GCU senior Jaden Henley, who led his team with 18 points, shooting well from both the field and the free-throw line. Henley made a crucial 3-point play that helped secure the lead late in the game.
The Lopes took charge early in the second half with a quick 9-0 run. Graduate guard Brian Moore Jr. sparked this momentum with two quick layups, forcing Utah to call a timeout early in the half.
Turning the game around also came from solid defense. GCU outscored Utah 17-0 in points from turnovers due to their strong ball-handling, while Utah struggled with 14 turnovers, including eight in the second half.
Head coach Bryce Drew noted the importance of their defense and ball control, saying, “It really speaks volumes to our defense and then our guys attacking the rim.”
This victory is significant as it not only highlights GCU’s skills but also reflects a growing trend in college basketball where defense plays a crucial role in securing wins. According to recent NCAA statistics, teams that excel in defense are often more successful in tournaments.
Next up, GCU will meet Iowa in the championship game, a rematch of their 2021 NCAA Tournament showdown. As the excitement builds, fans are eager to see how this game unfolds.
