Central Michigan Women’s Basketball pulled off an exciting win against Northern Illinois, 75-70, completing a season sweep in the Mid-American Conference.
Madi Morson led the way with 26 points, marking her 10th game with over 20 points this season. Ayanna-Sarai Darrington also stood out with a double-double, scoring 17 points and grabbing 11 rebounds.
The Chippewas faced some challenges early, trailing by seven points in the third quarter. However, they fought back with an 8-2 run, making the game a nail-biter until the very end.
Coach Kristin Haynie expressed pride in her team’s resilience. “I’m super proud of them for staying with it,” she said. “They found a way to win on the road against a tough crowd.”
In the second half, Jayda Mosley made a significant impact, scoring all 12 of her points, primarily by hitting four out of five shots from long range. Morson also contributed significantly, scoring 15 points in the second half to help turn the tide.
Rebounding played a crucial role in this victory. The Chippewas dominated the boards, collecting 42 rebounds compared to Northern Illinois’s 17. Coach Haynie noted, “Our players played really tough on the defensive end and were rebounding machines.”
Demetria Prewitt joined Darrington in the rebounding effort, also contributing 10 rebounds, showcasing the Chippewas’ collaborative effort.
This win marked an important milestone for Central Michigan, representing their third consecutive victory on the road—something not achieved since February 2021. Earlier in her coaching career, Haynie made headlines by breaking a lengthy 34-game road losing streak.
Next, the Chippewas will head to Buffalo for another matchup. After that, they will play three straight home games at McGuirk Arena against Marshall, Akron, and Western Michigan.
This season has seen a resurgence in Central Michigan’s performance, with key players stepping up when it mattered most. Their ability to work together and respond to challenges speaks volumes about their growth as a team.
