EUGENE, Ore. — Takai Simpkins led the Oregon Ducks to a thrilling 60-59 victory over Hawaii in their season opener. He scored 18 points, including the game-winning layup with just four seconds on the clock.
The Ducks struggled with their shooting, hitting only 36% from the field and just 13% from beyond the arc. They also turned the ball over 21 times, a point Head Coach Dana Altman emphasized. “We didn’t give ourselves chances,” he noted, highlighting the 12 turnovers in the first half. Despite these challenges, Altman stressed the importance of hard work to build confidence.
Beneath the stats, there were key contributions. Nate Bittle recorded a solid double-double with 12 points, 14 rebounds, and four blocks. Devon Pryor added nine points, while Sean Stewart chipped in with eight.
The game had its ups and downs. Oregon started strong, leading 33-26 at halftime. However, Hawaii came out firing in the second half, quickly closing the gap.
