Wheeling, W.Va. – After a tough start away from home, the Wheeling University Men’s Basketball team celebrated their first home game on Sunday. They faced Winston-Salem State and delivered an impressive 86-66 victory, showcasing a strong team effort. Twelve players scored at least two points, marking their highest score this season.
The game began evenly, with both teams trading baskets. They were tied at 6-6 before Caleb Murray hit a jumper, giving Wheeling their first lead at 9-8. Alex Smith added five quick points, but Winston-Salem fought back to tie the score again. The Cardinals found their rhythm with Jalen Wenger, whose three-pointer sparked an 8-0 run.
As the clock ran down in the first half, Wheeling’s three-point shooting made a significant impact. Ayden Goll hit a crucial three-pointer, contributing to a halftime lead of 39-28.
After halftime, Curtis Harrison IV quickly scored six points, helping Wheeling maintain their lead despite a push from Winston-Salem. Back-to-back threes from Wenger helped widen the gap. The Cardinals’ defense and scoring proved too much for the Rams, sealing their win.
Ayden Goll led the team with 15 points, while Curtis Harrison IV added 12 and grabbed seven rebounds. Jalen Wenger also shone with 11 points. Jerry Saunders Jr. led with five assists, showing the team’s balanced play.
This victory sets a positive tone as they prepare for the Mountain East Conference (MEC) play ahead.
