The Wesleyan men’s squash team had a solid weekend, finishing the Wesleyan Round Robin with a 5-4 win against Denison University. This victory brings their season record to 6-5, while Denison’s stands at 5-5.

Three freshmen players stood out, each securing three victories over the weekend. Zach Lu, playing at the #5 spot, faced challenges but pulled through in a nail-biting match, claiming the first set 14-12 and winning the next two 11-5, 11-8. At #6, Matthyaz Williams had a similar experience. He won the first set 13-11 and finished strong with wins of 11-5 and 11-8. Finn Goodson capped off the trio with a solid win at #9, defeating his opponent 11-8, 11-9, 11-6.

Sumer Singh Ahluwalia, at #8, also had an exciting match. After taking the lead, he faced a comeback but ultimately secured victory with set scores of 11-7, 9-11, 11-4, and 12-10.

Zack Idinopulos, competing at #7, had a nail-biter too, pushing his match to five sets. After losing the first set, he rallied back to win with scores of 7-11, 11-8, 11-7, 5-11, and 11-5.

Looking ahead, the Cardinals will be back on the courts on Friday, January 23, for the College Squash Association Individual Championships. This tournament will be a critical point in their season, offering players a chance to shine individually.

Competitions in college squash can be fierce and high-stakes, reflecting similar trends in collegiate sports where participation has increased significantly over the last decade.
