SAN DIEGO – Grand Canyon University (GCU) took the lead in their season series against San Diego State, winning 73-63 at the packed Viejas Arena. With this victory, GCU improved its all-time record against the Aztecs to 6-1. This win marked a significant achievement, as it was the first time since February 2015 that a Mountain West team won by double digits at San Diego State.
GCU, now 17-9 overall and 10-5 in the Mountain West, secured fourth place in the conference after San José State defeated Nevada. The Lopes bounced back from a 35-29 halftime deficit, scoring 44 points in the second half to seal the win.
Standout Performance
Freshman center Efe Demirel shined with his second double-double of the season. The 7-foot-1 player contributed 14 points, 11 rebounds, and two blocks. He shot 6 of 9 from the field, providing early scoring that energized GCU each half. His previous performance also included 15 points in a recent win over San José State.
Turning Point
GCU opened the second half strong, scoring on their first six possessions to regain the lead. They pushed through with a 19-8 run in the first nine minutes, while San Diego State struggled with only three successful shots and three turnovers during that stretch.
Defensive Dominance
The Lopes showcased their defensive strength by holding the Aztecs to a mere 35.5% shooting for the game. This statistic places GCU among the few teams this season, alongside top-ranked Michigan and Arizona, to limit San Diego State’s shooting to such a low percentage at home.
Coach’s Insight
GCU head coach Bryce Drew highlighted the importance of starting strong in the second half. He praised his players for their strong defensive efforts and smart decision-making, particularly emphasizing Efe’s impactful block and the guards’ skillful finishes.
Looking Ahead
GCU will head back to Phoenix for a game against Wyoming at 6 p.m. on Saturday. GCU has a solid record of 11-3 at home this season. Wyoming is also coming off a win, having defeated Fresno State 92-82.
The Lopes continue to build momentum as they head into a critical part of the season. For more details on player performances and game updates, visit gculopes.com.
