Hartford Women’s Lacrosse Team Falls to Johnson & Wales
The Hartford women’s lacrosse team faced a nail-biter on Wednesday, losing 16-15 to Johnson & Wales University. Despite a strong effort in the final moments, they couldn’t close the gap.
In the first quarter, both teams traded goals. Johnson & Wales took an early lead, scoring twice before sophomore Kate Zonin from North Smithfield, R.I., turned the tide, netting three goals to help Hartford climb back. Nonetheless, a last-second goal by the Wildcats left the Hawks trailing 5-4 at the end of the first.
The second quarter saw the Wildcats pushing ahead again, extending their lead to 8-5. However, Zonin kept the momentum shifting with two goals before halftime, reducing the deficit to 8-7.
Hartford came out aggressive in the third quarter, resulting in three lead changes. Senior Sara Costa tied the score early, but the Wildcats regained control. Zonin scored again, pulling Hartford ahead 11-10. As the quarter closed, Johnson & Wales ended strong with a 3-0 run, taking the lead at 13-11.
In the final quarter, JWU expanded its lead, but Hartford was determined. Zonin and junior Katie Graham scored, bringing the game within one. A late push from Johnson & Wales created distance, but Hartford kept pushing back. In the closing seconds, goals from Ingham and McIntosh nearly evened the score, but time ran out.
Key Performances
Zonin shone brightest with a career-high seven goals and one assist. Graham contributed three goals and one assist, while Costa and McIntosh each added two goals and one assist. Junior Mandi Rivard made 13 saves in goal, keeping Hartford competitive until the end.
