JACKSONVILLE – The Jaguars are sitting proudly at the top of the AFC South.
Even if the wider NFL audience doesn’t take notice, they’re perfectly fine with that.
In an impressive 36-19 win over the Indianapolis Colts, Travis Etienne Jr. scored two rushing touchdowns, and Trevor Lawrence added two passing touchdowns. The victory took place in front of 60,067 loyal fans on a chilly December day at EverBank Stadium.
“Our guys took control of the moment,” Head Coach Liam Coen said after the game.
The Jaguars are now 9-4, having won four straight games and maintaining an 11-game home win streak against the Colts, who have struggled lately and sit at 8-5. With the Houston Texans at 7-5, every game becomes crucial as the season progresses.
Players expressed a collective determination, fueled by a sense of being underestimated despite their success. This mindset shows their hunger to prove critics wrong. Trevor Lawrence echoed this sentiment:
“I think for our team, anything you can use as fuel, you use it,” Lawrence noted. He, along with Etienne, shined in the first half, leading 14-7 after the first quarter and 28-10 at halftime.
Lawrence threw touchdown passes to Jakobi Meyers and Tim Patrick, showcasing their strong offensive capabilities.
“We know it doesn’t really matter what anyone says on the outside, but you use all that as fuel,” Lawrence said. “We all feel like we’re a really good team and probably don’t get the credit we deserve. Everyone talks about every other team, but no one really cares about the Jags. That’s fine, though. We’ll keep that chip on our shoulder and keep playing.”
Historically, the Jaguars have had to fight for respect in the league. There’s a trend among underdog teams that often become playoff powerhouses, where a lack of acknowledgment fuels their drive. Recent data shows a significant drop in public support for underdog teams, yet the Jaguars outperform expectations and are ready to change the narrative.
As they continue their winning streak, it will be interesting to see how this newfound confidence translates on the field. Only time will tell if their play can silence critics and establish them as a force to be reckoned with in the NFL.
