Thrilling Showdown: Morgantown Dominates University 70-31 in Exciting Early-Season Mohawk Rivalry!

MORGANTOWN – Two local rivals faced off on Wednesday as University High School battled Morgantown High in girls basketball, continuing the tradition of the Mohawk Bowl.

Both teams came into the game with two straight wins. However, it was the Mohigans who claimed a decisive 70-31 victory, marking their third win this season. Morgantown dominated from the start, thanks to standout performances from players like junior Carper Messerly, who led with 17 points, six rebounds, and three steals. Junior Brenna Nelson contributed 14 points, while sophomore Sydney Deusenberry added 10 points and seven assists.

“These girls make coaching enjoyable,” said MHS head coach John Fowkes. “They bring energy and a great attitude every day, and they push us as coaches to bring our best. After a shaky game last Saturday, we challenged them, and they responded well.”

On the other side, University High School had some bright spots, notably junior Cheyanna Bishoff, who scored 10 points, including three three-pointers. Despite the loss, UHS head coach Sammy Lusk remains optimistic. “This game doesn’t represent who we are,” he said. “We have the potential to improve as the season progresses.”

Morgantown’s strong defense translated into 31 rebounds and 13 steals, showcasing their teamwork as eight players found the scoreboard. The team’s depth was impressive, with nearly every player contributing in different areas.

“We train hard, and it shows,” Fowkes noted. “Our practices are intense, and the girls thrive on that.”

The game saw a slow start in the second half, but Messerly ignited the momentum with a three-pointer, pushing Morgantown to maintain their lead comfortably.

Looking ahead, University will travel to Laurel Highlands (Pa.) for their next game, while Morgantown enjoys a brief break before facing Southern (Pa.) at home next Saturday.
