Thrilling Showdown: Mount St. Mary’s Edges Out Morgan State in a Gripping Match – Morgan State University Athletics

EMMITSBURG, Md. (Nov. 12, 2025)—

Mihjae Hayes led the Lady Bears with 14 points and made three steals against Mount St. Mary’s, but it wasn’t enough. Morgan State lost 69-47 at Knott Arena on Saturday.

Hayes shot 6-of-9 and grabbed seven defensive rebounds. Selina Gutierrez added nine points, while Success Prysock recorded five points and a game-high 11 rebounds.

Morgan State struggled at the start, falling behind 9-0. Gutierrez’s three-pointer brought the score to 9-3, but the Mountaineers increased their lead to 15-3. Dakota Alston hit a three-pointer, and Hayes scored with a jumper, ending the first quarter at 18-8 in favor of Mount St. Mary’s.

The second quarter mirrored the first. The Mountaineers scored the first seven points, making it 25-8. Deniz Torgut’s three-pointer capped a 13-1 run, extending their lead to 31-9, their biggest margin at that point. Morgan trailed 36-20 at halftime.

In the final quarter, the Mount’s advantage reached 25 points after Gabrielle Kennerly’s layup made it 59-34.

Morgan State’s shooting was a struggle, finishing at 27.6% (16-of-58) and 17.6% (3-of-17) from three-point range. They hit 63.2% (12-of-19) from the free-throw line. In contrast, the Mountaineers shot 38.3% (23-of-60) overall, with a stronger bench that outscored Morgan 41-10.

Mount St. Mary’s Kennerly topped their scoring with 12 points, along with two rebounds and two blocks.

Looking ahead, Morgan State will host Johns Hopkins on November 18 at 5 p.m. at Hill Field House.

In recent news around women’s basketball, teams are increasingly focusing on bench depth. According to a study by the Women’s Sports Foundation, teams with a more balanced bench tend to perform better in games, as seen in this matchup. With the Lady Bears facing player absences, their bench will need to step up to compete effectively in upcoming games.
