Thrilling Showdown: NJCU Women’s Wrestling Shines at Adrian College Invitational!

Strong Performance at Adrian College Invitational

The New Jersey City University (NJCU) women’s wrestling team put on an impressive show at the Adrian College Women’s Invitational on November 9. The event took place at the Merillat Sport and Fitness Center.

Junior Gabrielle Miller led the team in the 145-pound bracket. She kicked off her day with an impressive 12-0 technical fall victory in just over a minute. After a tough second match, she bounced back with a pin in 1:12, followed by another pin in 1:26. Miller continued her streak with a 10-0 technical fall and another pin in 1:30, finishing with a 5-1 record. Although she faced a challenging opponent later, she secured a fifth-place finish overall.

In the 124-pound bracket, Nuria Kojic faced a series of tough challengers but wrapped up her day with a solid 3-2 record. She started strong with a comeback win, rallying from a 10-8 deficit to achieve a fall at 4:22. Kojic suffered one loss but responded with a pin in 2:58, followed by a decisive 14-4 technical fall.

Fabiana Josa had a noteworthy outing in the 180-pound bracket, beginning with a quick pin in just 27 seconds. After winning by forfeit in her second matchup, she ended the tournament with a record of 2-2.

Freshman Marielys Lugo-Fernandez gained valuable experience in the 103-pound bracket, securing a swift 10-0 technical fall victory in just 52 seconds. In the 110-pound bracket, senior Dyanne Pelaez fought hard but ended up with an 0-2 record. Similarly, sophomore Hailey Beck faced tough competition in the 117-pound division and also concluded her day with two losses.

Looking ahead, the Gothic Knights will host Alvernia in a matchup on November 22 at 2:00 p.m. at the John J. Moore Athletics and Fitness Center.

Women’s wrestling is growing in popularity and visibility. According to the National Wrestling Coaches Association, participation among female wrestlers in the U.S. has seen a 35% increase in recent years. This surge highlights the positive impact of events like the Adrian College Invitational and organizations supporting women’s sports.
