CLEMSON, S.C. – The Clemson Tigers, ranked 24th, celebrated a solid 7-3 victory over Winthrop on Tuesday night at McWhorter Stadium. This win boosts their record to 17-7 for the season.
Sophomore Corri Hicks was a standout player, hitting a three-run homer in the bottom of the first inning. This marked her fifth home run of the year. She ended the night with four RBIs after also contributing with a sacrifice fly later in the game. Junior Sierra Maness earned her ninth win, pitching the last 3.1 innings and recording two strikeouts.
The game started with Winthrop taking an early lead. They scored off an error by Clemson, but the Tigers quickly responded. After Jamison Brockenbrough reached base with a bunt, a single by Julia Knowler brought her home. Hicks then hit the big three-run homer, pushing the Tigers ahead 4-1.
Winthrop didn’t back down and narrowed the gap by scoring two runs in the third inning. However, Clemson answered back in the fourth. After a hit by pitch put Channell on base, Mac Pavese doubled, loading the bases. A groundout allowed Channell to score, followed by another sacrifice fly from Knowler, making it 6-3 by the end of the fourth.
Clemson maintained control, keeping Winthrop scoreless in the sixth inning. Pavese started the bottom of that inning with a single. A double by Collins and a walk from pinch hitter Ava Wilson loaded the bases again. Hicks capped her night with a sacrifice fly that scored Pavese, sealing the game at 7-3.
Pitching was key, with freshman Keira Crosby starting and striking out one before Lexie Hames took over. Hames added two strikeouts in her time on the mound.
Looking ahead, the Tigers will face Louisville in a three-game series starting March 13. Friday’s game is set for 4 p.m., while Saturday’s match will highlight Clemson’s Alumni Day at 1 p.m.
In a sports scene where fan engagement is critical, social media buzzed with excitement over Hicks’ performance. Fans shared clips and celebrated the team’s resilience. According to recent surveys, college softball viewership has surged, with a 30% increase in audiences over the past two years, highlighting the growing popularity of women’s sports.
