Thrilling Showdown: Washington Edges Out Oregon 70-69 in Last Regular Season Game – University of Washington Athletics

EUGENE, Ore. — The Washington women’s basketball team secured a nail-biting 70-69 victory against Oregon on Sunday, thanks to a crucial free throw by Devin Coppinger in the final seconds. This win marks a significant milestone, giving the Huskies their first 20-win season since 2016-17.

Washington showcased strong shooting skills, hitting 45.8% of their field goals and 33.3% from beyond the arc. Sayvia Sellers was a standout, scoring 29 points after a flawless first half, where she made all six of her shots and sank four 3-pointers. This achievement puts her at six games this season with 25 or more points.

Elle Ladine was another key player, contributing 11 points along with five rebounds and two assists. Coppinger matched her season-high with nine points, including two 3-pointers early in the game. Her free throw with just five seconds left sealed the Huskies’ victory.

Defensively, Washington forced 14 turnovers and recorded seven steals, with Avery Howell leading the team with three. Remarkably, they limited Oregon to only nine points in the first quarter—a trend that has occurred four times in the last two games.

Sellers also led the team with five assists, while Howell grabbed eight rebounds.

Looking ahead, the Huskies will head to Indianapolis for the Big Ten Tournament, facing USC on Thursday, March 5, at 9:00 a.m. PST.

In recent years, women’s basketball has gained significant attention, with collegiate programs seeking to elevate their standings nationally. In fact, the NCAA reported a 10% increase in viewership for women’s tournaments in 2022 alone, reflecting the growing interest and investment in women’s sports. This transformation helps pave the way for aspiring athletes who look up to teams like Washington, showcasing skill and determination on bigger stages.
