Thrilling Showdown: Wheeling University Men’s Soccer Falls Just Short Against Frostburg State

Wheeling, W. Va. — The Mountain East Conference (MEC) season is wrapping up. On Wednesday night, the Wheeling University Men’s Soccer team faced Frostburg State in a tough match. Despite showing effort, they lost 2-0, marking their 12th conference loss.

The game started intensely, with Wheeling pushing forward early. Just three minutes in, freshman Elie Simon made a strong run, but Frostburg’s goalkeeper, Jan Foret, made a key save. The Cardinals maintained possession for the first quarter of the match, but Frostburg turned the tide. In the 18th minute, they scored from a free kick by Andrew Denard, assisted by Mason Salvadge. This gave Frostburg a 1-0 lead.

Even though the Cardinals controlled the ball well, Frostburg struck again before halftime. Danny Medina scored in the 43rd minute, doubling their lead. Despite outshooting Frostburg 6-5 in the first half, Wheeling went into halftime trailing.

As the second half began, Frostburg tried to extend their lead. Wheeling’s goalie, Diego Marquez, stepped up, making several saves and keeping the score at 2-0. The Cardinals struggled to find the net, with their first shot on target not coming until the 71st minute. Even then, Foret was quick to stop the shot.

Baptiste Hervaud led Wheeling with four shots, including two on goal, a career-high for him. Simon and Jon-Michael Gordon also contributed, each with two shots. Marquez recorded three saves, helping to keep the game close until the end.

With two matches left in the season, the Cardinals are looking to finish strong. They hope to build momentum as they head into the 2026 season.
