<Villanova, PA> – On a rainy Saturday, the Villanova Wildcats faced off against Seton Hall, resulting in a 1-1 draw at the Higgins Soccer Complex. While the match was tough, a couple of bench players made a big impact for Villanova.
Midfielder Marcello Mazzola and forward Javon Daniels entered the match in the 37th minute. They quickly teamed up to score Villanova’s only goal. Mazzola passed to Daniels, who sent a perfect cross to Zach Miles. Miles managed to head the ball past Seton Hall’s goalkeeper, Matias Molina, just before halftime, leveling the game after Seton Hall had taken the lead.
Villanova’s head coach, Mark Fetrow, praised his team’s depth. He noted, “Bringing in fresh legs helps us keep the energy high.” It was a special moment for Miles too, as it marked his first college goal.
Seton Hall had opened the scoring with a stunning goal by Sam Bjork, who found the net from a challenging angle just before Villanova’s equalizer.
The second half saw both teams challenging each other but failing to break the deadlock. Villanova showed promise in their defense, with sophomore goalkeeper Alex Yagudayev making crucial saves, and defenders Brody Crampton and Lorenzo Avalas crucially limiting Seton Hall’s attacks.
Fetrow stressed the importance of their defensive strategy, saying, “When we defend well as a unit, we are much more effective.” Although there were moments of hesitation leading to turnovers, the team is keen on improving in these areas.
Looking ahead, Villanova will face Creighton on October 17 at 3 p.m. This upcoming match is another chance for the Wildcats to build on this draw and show their strength in the BIG EAST.
