Georgia Stuns Arkansas in Soccer Showdown
In an exciting match, the No. 22 University of Georgia soccer team defeated No. 6 Arkansas 1-0 in front of 1,875 fans at the Turner Soccer Complex on Friday. This win marked Georgia’s first victory over a top-10 team since the SEC Tournament final earlier this year.
From the start, Georgia was on the attack. Freshman forward Lily Kate Elphick made her debut and had a shot on target just a minute into the game. The Bulldogs kept up the pressure, registering four shots in the opening minutes and finishing the game with a total of 15 shots, the highest they’ve had in an SEC match this season. They also earned 10 corner kicks compared to Arkansas’s 3.
In the second half, things got tense. Freshman Mya Townes broke the deadlock, scoring her third goal of the season after a perfect pass from teammate Hailey Gordon. Georgia has been particularly strong in the second half, netting 18 of their 31 goals this season after halftime.
The game was often physical, with both teams committing a total of 22 fouls. Arkansas’s coach, Colby Hale, received a red card in the 77th minute for dissent, adding to the intensity of the match.
Georgia’s goalkeeper, Hannah Folliard, played a critical role, making several key saves to secure a clean sheet. This was Folliard’s fourth solo shutout of the season, contributing to Georgia’s overall defensive strength.
Head coach Keidane McAlpine praised the team’s effort and the supportive atmosphere from the fans. He highlighted how the players’ energy fed into the crowd, creating an electric environment that fueled the Bulldogs’ performance.
“The energy we had was necessary and one of the reasons we won,” he said.
Mya Townes, reflecting on her game-winning goal, expressed her determination. “I just took my opportunity when it came to me,” she shared, emphasizing the importance of seizing chances in soccer.
Georgia’s win could play a significant role in their confidence moving forward as they face Texas next on October 16th.
