Thrilling Victory: SCSU Men’s Basketball Triumphs Over AIC 61-49 – Highlights from Southern Connecticut State University Athletics

Southern Connecticut Men’s Basketball Secures First Win of the Season

Southern Connecticut’s men’s basketball team celebrated their first victory of the 2025-26 season, defeating American International 61-49. With this win, the Owls now sit at 1-3 as they approach the Thanksgiving break.

Justice Ellison shined in this matchup, scoring 19 points and grabbing six rebounds against his former team. Cherif Diarra contributed significantly with a double-double, totaling 14 points and 13 rebounds. Christian McClease made his presence felt off the bench, adding 10 points with impressive shooting.

This win marked the Owls’ ninth consecutive victory over the Yellow Jackets. The game started defensively, with the Owls pulling ahead with a three-pointer from Diarra at the 15-minute mark, leading 12-10. Together, Ellison and Diarra scored 10 of the team’s first 12 points, setting the tone early.

As the half progressed, a three from McClease tied the game at 17, but Southern quickly regained momentum, taking a 23-17 lead. Rob Taylor and Jahlil Bethea, both making their debuts, also contributed off the bench, helping the Owls to a four-point edge by halftime.

In the second half, Southern maintained their lead with critical baskets from Malik Banks. The Yellow Jackets pushed hard, getting within single digits at times, but the combination of timely scores from Diarra and Ellison, plus solid rebounding from Simon Percy, kept the Owls in control. With just under three minutes left, Southern extended their lead to 10 points and held on for the victory.

As they prepare for their next challenge, the Owls will host Franklin Pierce on December 3rd at 7:30 p.m. This game will be significant, as it counts toward their conference standings.

This season’s performance reflects a trend seen in collegiate sports. According to a recent NCAA report, teams often experience ups and downs early in the season but can bounce back with strategic adjustments and teamwork.

With the momentum of this win, Southern Connecticut aims to build on their successes and strengthen their conference position in the weeks ahead.
