The University of Wyoming’s Nordic ski team showcased impressive skill at the Colorado State University (CSU) Invitational held on February 22-23 in Leadville, Colorado. They dominated the competition, winning three out of four races.
On February 22, the women excelled in a 6km classic race, while the men also took first place in the same event. The following day, the women’s relay-style skate team sprint brought home another victory, with each of the three skiers in a team racing one lap at a time.
UW’s co-coach, Christine Boggs, praised her team’s performance under challenging conditions. “It was tough with low snow and steep hills,” she said. Yet, the skiers persevered. For the men, seven out of the top eight finishers hailed from UW, while five women finished in the top ten.
Junior Austin Quillinan nearly clinched first place, finishing just four seconds shy. Alongside him were a strong group of teammates, all pushing hard against stiff competition.
In the women’s race, sophomore Eleanor Veauthier led the way, taking third overall. She was closely followed by teammates Shayla Babits and Leah Ines, who also placed in the top five.
The team scores reflected their strength. The UW men finished with a score of nine points, significantly ahead of their closest rival, Colorado Mesa University. The Cowgirls weren’t far behind either, with a low score of twelve points. Both teams further solidified their standings for the season.
The sprint relay on February 23 saw the UW women overcome a strong field to finish well ahead of the next competitor. Their combined time of 36:38.7 showcased their teamwork and stamina, while the men’s team took second place despite some tough competition.
Amy Smith, a sports historian, observes that UW’s recent successes in Nordic skiing resonate with the program’s history. “It’s not just about winning but about building a community of athletes who support each other — that’s what keeps the program thriving,” she shares.
In recent years, participation in college Nordic skiing has seen positive trends. A survey conducted by the NCAA found an increase in student-athletes engaging in winter sports, showing a heightened interest in this physically demanding discipline.
