Thriving Food Truck Scene: Uncovering New Opportunities in Cotati

Cotati is taking steps to support small businesses, especially food vendors. On March 16, the Planning Commission unanimously backed a new ordinance to improve regulations for mobile food businesses.

City Manager Damien O’Bid shared that the ordinance aims to simplify the rules for different types of food trucks and vendors. He highlighted Galvan’s Tacos, which recently opened a brick-and-mortar restaurant after gaining popularity with their food truck. “We want to create a framework that helps food businesses start and thrive,” O’Bid said.

Currently, cities often face limits on how they can regulate these vendors. California’s Senate Bill 972 acknowledges food operations like pushcarts as a unique category and encourages cities to develop their own rules. This is key for Cotati, as food trucks aren’t fully addressed in the local code yet.

The proposed changes include allowing more food truck events and easing permissions to operate on private property. Vendors would need a minor use permit to set up near homes and can only occupy a small plot of land. If approved, food trucks would be limited to using two public parking spaces and up to three private ones, with operations allowed for a maximum of 40 days a year.

Local business owners are optimistic. Omar Galvan, co-owner of Galvan’s Tacos, expressed excitement about the city’s support for small businesses. “People love variety, and food trucks bring that. It’s great when policies change to benefit us,” he said.

Recent data supports these sentiments. According to a 2022 report, food trucks contributed over $1 billion to the U.S. economy, highlighting their growing role in local communities. This trend suggests that cities like Cotati could see economic benefits as they embrace food vendors.

The Planning Commission has asked for minor adjustments to the proposed rules before they go to the City Council for a decision on April 14. O’Bid is hopeful these changes will foster business growth and enhance dining options for the community.
