A YouTuber has successfully ordered a Domino’s pizza using a Nintendo Wii, more than ten years after the console’s online services were shut down. This feat was accomplished by Retro Game Attic, who utilized a fan-made app called Food Channel. This app is a version of Japan’s Demae Channel, which allowed Wii owners to order food directly through the console.
Nintendo ended online services for the Wii back in 2014. However, thanks to an open-source project called Wii Link, Retro Game Attic managed to reconnect the console and place an order. With this setup, he could access real-time updates and images from Domino’s website.
The Food Channel first launched in Japan in 2009 but became unavailable outside the country after Nintendo shut down services. For over a decade, it remained dormant until now. Retro Game Attic showcased the whole process in a video, showing how to navigate the Wii interface and successfully place an order. Despite the console being over 15 years old, the order went through and was delivered.
Interestingly, the Nintendo Wii was released in 2006 and was one of the early consoles that ventured into non-gaming features, paving the way for today’s common food ordering and streaming apps. Yes, it might seem retro now, but back then, it was groundbreaking.
Experts in technology and gaming have noted how innovative the Wii was for its time. According to a recent tech study, around 15% of consumers still prefer using gaming consoles for online services, showing the enduring legacy of retro devices.
