Reflecting on the championship, Ashley expressed how much it meant to her and her teammates. “The desire to win was stronger than ever after falling short in past years,” she said. Her words highlight the passion that fueled their journey and inspired younger players to unite behind a common goal.
The tournament was remarkable for several reasons. Ashley recalls the unparalleled support from the campus community and the excitement leading up to the final match. Over 4,500 fans attended, creating an electric atmosphere. “I had never played in front of so many people. Seeing my family and friends in that crowd fired us up even more,” she recalled.
Coached by Hank Leung, Ashley learned valuable lessons that shaped her understanding of soccer. She described him as “a visionary who was emotional, colorful, and motivating.” His impactful coaching style came to life during a memorable moment—comparing the team to birds taking their first flight, which energized the squad.
Early in the season, the Patriots faced a tough match against UNC. Down 3-1 at halftime, the team’s refusal to give up sparked a comeback, ending in a 3-3 tie. “That game taught us resilience,” Ashley noted. “We learned we could bounce back from setbacks.”
After her time at George Mason, Ashley remained active in soccer, coaching high school teams and working with youth in various programs. She also made her mark in education, teaching physical education in Fairfax County Public Schools, where she supported students with disabilities.
On September 20, 2023, George Mason University will honor Ashley and her teammates from the 1985 championship team during a game against George Washington. This celebration not only acknowledges their achievements but also reinforces the lasting legacy of their victory.
