The Detroit Tigers recently unveiled new coaching hires, aiming to strengthen their team for the upcoming season. Cody Asche and Anthony Sanders are joining the staff from the Baltimore Orioles. Asche will serve as the assistant hitting coach, while Sanders takes on the role of first base coach. Additionally, Billy Boyer has been promoted to major league quality coach after a successful run as the minor league field coordinator.
Sanders brings valuable experience, having coached first base for the Orioles since 2020. Before that, he made his mark in the minor leagues, winning the Pioneer League Manager of the Year in 2014 for leading Grand Junction to a top finish. He’s stepping in for Anthony Iapoce, who held the first base coach position for the past two years.
Asche’s journey is quite inspiring. From playing professional baseball until 2019, he quickly moved up the coaching ladder. He started as a minor league hitting coach with the Philadelphia Phillies in 2021 and later made his way to Baltimore, where he was promoted to the major league staff in 2023.
Boyer’s return to the Tigers marks a continuation of his coaching career with the team, having previously served as the infield coordinator. After a brief stint in college coaching, he’s back to help mold the next generation of Tigers players.
The Tigers also made significant changes in their front office. Dr. Georgia Giblin has been promoted to Vice President of Health & Performance, after five years in the organization. Alex Smith, previously with the Cubs, takes on the role of Vice President of Baseball Strategy. His analytics background is expected to benefit the team’s operations.
There’s also a shift in the scouting department. Brad Ciolek, formerly with the Nationals, has been appointed as Director of International Scouting. His experience includes 11 years with Baltimore’s scouting team. This hiring allows Tom Moore to transition into a role as Senior Advisor for International Operations.
These changes reflect the Tigers’ commitment to improving both their coaching staff and front office as they seek to enhance team performance. Keeping a keen eye on evolving coaching methods and analytics, the organization aims to establish a competitive edge in Major League Baseball.
