Timothy Busfield’s role has been removed from the upcoming Amazon MGM rom-com, You Deserve Each Other, due to serious allegations of child sexual abuse.
The film stars Meghann Fahy and Penn Badgley and is based on Sarah Hogle’s bestselling novel. It tells the story of an engaged couple who have lost their spark and decide to sabotage each other, only to rediscover their love in the process.
Busfield was cast as Bernie, Fahy’s character Naomi’s father. The film’s release date has not been announced yet.
Recently, an arrest warrant was issued for Busfield over incidents involving children on the set of Fox’s The Cleaning Lady. He later turned himself in to authorities in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Charges against him include two counts of criminal sexual contact with a minor and child abuse, stemming from allegations involving two male minors during his time directing and acting in the show.
While Busfield maintains his innocence, he is facing additional allegations. He is accused of groping a teenage girl during an audition at the B Street Theatre in Sacramento, California. This isn’t his first legal trouble; he faced similar allegations years ago. He settled with a 17-year-old extra from the 1994 film Little Big League and also had a claim from another woman who accused him of groping her on a date in 2012.
Due to these serious accusations, his talent agency, Innovative Artists, has cut ties with him, and an episode of Law & Order: SVU, where he guest stars, has been pulled from the lineup.
Busfield’s next court date is set for January 20, where he will attend a pretrial detention hearing.
This situation has sparked conversations on social media about accountability in the entertainment industry. Many viewers are expressing their disappointment, especially in light of the #MeToo movement, which aims to highlight and combat sexual abuse. As these allegations unfold, the impact on Busfield’s career and the broader industry remains to be seen.
