A grand jury in New Mexico has indicted actor Timothy Busfield on child sex abuse charges. He faces four counts of criminal sexual contact with a minor, according to the Bernalillo County District Attorney’s office.
District Attorney Sam Bregman stated that Busfield is presumed innocent until proven guilty. He mentioned that a special victims unit will handle the prosecution, but no further details will be released at this time.
Busfield’s lawyer, Larry Stein, said the indictment didn’t come as a surprise. He expressed concern that the case lacks a solid foundation and suggested it might be driven by other motivations. Stein emphasized that Busfield intends to contest the charges in court, where he believes evidence will matter.
The indictment follows Busfield’s recent arrest on similar charges involving two boys from a Fox series he worked on. Allegedly, the incidents occurred on the set of “The Cleaning Lady” between November 2022 and early 2024. Busfield’s defense claims the accusations stem from a vendetta after the boys lost their roles.
In a recent hearing, a deputy district attorney presented detailed accounts from the children about the alleged abuse. They were reportedly shared with their therapist and physician and were described as specific and credible. However, a director of photography from the show testified he did not observe any inappropriate behavior.
Interestingly, an independent investigation by Warner Bros., which co-produced the show, found no evidence to support the allegations. This has added another layer of complexity to the case.
During the hearing, the prosecution mentioned previous allegations against Busfield, involving inappropriate touching by other individuals, but the judge noted those had not led to any criminal charges and attributed little weight to them.
Ultimately, the judge decided that Busfield does not pose a risk to the community and released him on his own recognizance while awaiting trial.
