Tina Fey is a remarkable figure in entertainment. With her first sitcom, 30 Rock, she carved out a spot in TV history. Fey’s latest project, The Four Seasons, is a Netflix adaptation of Alan Alda’s 1981 film. Alda, a legend in comedy, appears in the show, which features a talented cast, including Fey’s old SNL buddy, Will Forte.
“I love the cozy tone of the show,” Fey shared in a recent interview. She aimed to create an enjoyable viewing experience by gathering familiar comedy talent and expanding on the characters and stories from the original film.
In the second season, the show follows the ups and downs of three long-standing couples over a year of vacations. After a shocking twist where one character leaves, the dynamics shift dramatically when tragedy strikes. This blend of comedy and drama offers unique storytelling opportunities.
“Those emotionally charged moments are where comedy shines,” Forte noted, explaining that humor often arises during dark times. Fey added simply, “Well, honey, my grief is funny.” This combination creates a fresh challenge for them compared to their past projects, which focused more on fast-paced humor.
Fey recognized the freedom that comes with progressing the story quickly. “It’s exciting to let the characters evolve,” she said. This new approach has been well-received, as season two’s ratings have surpassed those of the first, landing the show in the top viewed on Netflix.
Interestingly, Fey and Forte discussed the idea of not watching the original The Four Seasons movie as a tool for crafting their performances. Forte joked about his choices, claiming he wanted to avoid imitation to provide an authentic portrayal of his character. Fey humorously accused him of positioning himself as a method actor, drawing a laugh from both.
