On March 3, 2026, President Bola Tinubu launched the Renewed Hope Climate Change Awareness Tour (REHCCAT) in Abuja. This national initiative focuses on boosting climate resilience and promoting sustainable development throughout Nigeria.
During the event at the State House Conference Centre, Tinubu emphasized the need for cooperation among governors, private sector leaders, and other stakeholders. He urged them to transform climate awareness into real action.
“Climate change isn’t just a risk; it’s an opportunity for innovation and growth,” he mentioned. His remarks were delivered by Minister of Environment Balarabe Lawal. The President highlighted the pressing issues Nigeria faces due to climate change, such as droughts affecting farmers in the north and flooding in the south.
He noted, “We are at a critical moment as the world shifts toward low-carbon development. Nigeria aims to lead in this transition.” The tour is designed to engage various groups, including students, farmers, and entrepreneurs, making the conversation about climate change accessible to everyone.
Through this initiative, the government plans to uncover viable projects, encourage local solutions, and create partnerships between the public and private sectors. The emphasis is on actionable commitments to reduce emissions and enhance community resilience.
Lawal, speaking on behalf of Tinubu, pointed out the urgency of addressing climate issues such as desertification and erratic rainfall, which have severe effects on farmers. He praised the Climate Change Act of 2021 for paving the way toward coordinated climate governance in Nigeria, emphasizing that these efforts must extend to local levels for real change.
Special Assistant Yussuf Kelani described the tour as a significant shift in leadership and commitment to Nigeria’s environmental and economic security. The initiative aims to empower communities through localized climate knowledge and create opportunities for green jobs.
Professor Babajide Alo, a guest speaker, highlighted the importance of community-led efforts in tackling climate challenges. He underscored the need for responsible consumption and sustainable practices across all sectors.

According to a recent report by the UN, adapting to climate change could deliver economic benefits worth $2.8 trillion globally by 2030, demonstrating the potential for growth in this sector.
