TN Government Teams Up with UNWFP for Groundbreaking Climate Resilience Initiative in Ramanathapuram

Chennai has taken a significant step in addressing climate challenges. The Tamil Nadu government recently partnered with the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) to launch a project called ‘Adaptation for Resilience’ (ADAPT4R). This initiative will enhance climate resilience among agricultural communities, particularly in Tamil Nadu, Odisha, and Andhra Pradesh.

The agreement was signed by Supriya Sahu from the Tamil Nadu government and Nozomi Hashimoto from WFP India. With support from the Adaptation Fund, ADAPT4R targets vulnerable smallholder farmers, especially women, in Ramanathapuram district over the next five years.

The project plans to promote sustainable farming techniques, ensuring farmers have access to vital resources and information. This will also include strengthening local community institutions and implementing early warning systems to help farmers respond to climate risks.

With a budget of $14 million, the project aims to protect food security and livelihoods against the effects of extreme weather and climate change. This new initiative builds on a previous agreement made in August 2024 between the Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change (MoEFCC) and WFP, further solidifying state-level commitments to national climate goals.

This collaboration comes at a crucial time. According to a recent survey by the Indian Meteorological Department, over 70% of farmers in southern India have reported changes in rainfall patterns affecting their harvests. As climate volatility increases, actions like ADAPT4R are vital.

Experts emphasize that climate-resilient practices are not merely beneficial but essential. Dr. Suthanuka Sarkar from MoEFCC highlights the urgency: “Climate adaptation strategies can significantly reduce risks to agriculture and ensure food security for future generations.”
