Tom Watson Reflects on Heartfelt Final Round with His Father: An Emotional Tribute

In a heartfelt moment at the 2025 PGA Show in Orlando, golf legend Tom Watson received the National Golf Course Owners Association’s Merit Award. Watson, celebrated for his eight major wins, shared stories from his career during a chat with NGCOA CEO Jay Karen.

As the session wrapped up, an audience member asked Watson about his favorite memory related to golf. This question stopped him cold. After taking a moment to gather his thoughts, he shared a touching story about his father.

Raymond Watson, a former club champion and a passionate golfer, was pivotal in Tom’s introduction to the game. He taught Tom how to grip a club and find his stance when he was just six years old. Sadly, Raymond passed away in 2000, but his love for golf remained vibrant until the end. Tom recalled how his dad would bundle up in cold weather, heading out to play with just six clubs and a determination that inspired Tom.

“Dad, what did you shoot today?” Tom would often ask. His father had a playful response: “Just a newspaper 50,” referring to his score for the day.

One memorable trip to Long Lake in Michigan was particularly special. In 1999, Tom and Raymond played at Belvedere Golf Club. Before they started, Tom encouraged his dad to not pick up any balls, as he hadn’t broken 90 since his stroke. To everyone’s surprise, Raymond shot a 41 on the front nine.

As they approached the final hole, Raymond needed a bogey to break 90. With a perfect drive, he seemed all set, but then a mishap occurred. Despite his struggle, Raymond made a valiant effort, and he ended with a bogey, finishing with an 89.

After the round, Tom asked, “Dad, do you know what you shot?” His father’s expression reflected a mix of pride and frustration for missing that last putt. For Tom, this day stood out as the last round he played with his father—a memory that eclipsed all his tournament victories.

Watson’s story resonated with everyone in attendance, showcasing the emotional ties that golf can create. It wasn’t about records or trophies; it was about a shared love of the game between a father and son.
