BYU Wins ESPN Events Invitational Championship
Kissimmee, Fla. — BYU has clinched the ESPN Events Invitational championship by defeating Dayton 83-79. The game took place at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex at Walt Disney World, marking a solid boost for BYU as they improve to a record of 6-1 this season.
The Cougars are quickly gaining a reputation as a strong second-half team. Just like in their previous game against Miami, they were trailing at halftime but came roaring back after the break. They opened the second half with a stunning 26-4 run. After Dayton started the half with a three-pointer, BYU responded with 15 points in a row.
Even though Dayton managed to tie the game at 70 with just over three minutes remaining, BYU’s Richie Saunders and AJ Dybantsa hit crucial shots in the final moments to secure the win. In fact, BYU scored 53 points in the second half alone, shooting an impressive 65.6% from the floor and 63.6% from three-point range.
Richie Saunders stood out during the game, earning MVP honors. He scored a career-high 29 points and contributed eight rebounds. AJ Dybantsa and Rob Wright III also had strong performances, combining with Saunders to score 70 of BYU’s 83 points. Wright added 23 points, while Dybantsa finished with 18.
Interestingly, none of BYU’s bench players scored during this game. All points came from the starting lineup, which highlights a potential challenge for the team moving forward. Especially after Dawson Baker went down with what seemed like a serious injury. Baker was seen in a wheelchair the following day, and his absence could significantly hurt BYU’s depth and shooting capability.
Experts in sports analytics suggest that relying heavily on a small number of players can be risky in any competitive league, like the Big 12. According to a recent NCAA study, teams that have a deeper bench tend to perform better, especially as the season progresses. This finding underscores the need for BYU to develop more consistent contributions from its bench players if they want to maintain their competitive edge.
