INDIANAPOLIS – The 2026 NFL Scouting Combine is buzzing with activity, and we’re picking up some key insights about the Pittsburgh Steelers. Our team, including Joe Clark, Ryan Paglia, Devin Jackson, and myself, is on the ground interviewing players and diving into the draft class. Here are five early takeaways.
Eyes on the Secondary
The Steelers have shown a strong interest in bolstering their secondary. After a subdued first day of interviews, Thursday morning brought a flurry of activity. We noted at least 15 meetings with cornerbacks and safeties, both formal and informal. With a rich pool of secondary talent in the draft and five picks to use, fans shouldn’t be shocked if a corner or safety is picked in the first or second round.

Linebackers on the Radar
Patrick Queen is under contract, but the Steelers might explore other options. Payton Wilson had limited playing time last season, making inside linebacker a position to watch. They’ve met with at least two linebackers, including Jake Golday from Cincinnati, who could rise in the draft rankings with a strong showing. At 6-4, he could fit nicely into Pittsburgh’s scheme.

A Shift in Defensive Line Talent
This year’s draft class is noticeably different from last year’s. While last year’s players varied widely, this year’s focus is on interior defensive linemen, which may suit a 4-3 system better. Options for prototypical 6-5, 300-pound defensive ends are scarce. Some notable names include:

- Clemson DT DeMonte Capehart
- Mississippi DT Zxavian Harris
Thankfully, there are numerous strong nose tackle prospects available, including Lee Hunter and Tim Keenan III.

Shorter Arms for EDGE Rushers
The combine has also revealed some unique stats, particularly concerning EDGE rushers. Notable players like Rueben Bain Jr. from Miami and Cassius Howell from Texas A&M recorded unusually short arm lengths. Bain’s arms measured 30 7/8″, while Howell’s were even shorter at 30 1/4”. Despite these measurements being less than ideal, both remain likely first-round picks, sparking a conversation on the evolving priorities for evaluating future EDGE prospects.

Another Defensive Line Pick?
After selecting Derrick Harmon in the first round last year, the Steelers might target another defensive lineman early this time too. They’ve shown significant interest in defensive backs but also met with top talent like Kayden McDonald from Ohio State and Lee Hunter from Texas Tech. However, they may opt to wait until Day 2 to pick someone like Darrell Jackson Jr. from Texas A&M.
