This long holiday weekend, take a moment to relax and gather your thoughts. If you’re looking for some spots that can brighten your mood, here are three great dining recommendations that I recently enjoyed.
Bar Benjamin
Just after Bar Benjamin opened in Hollywood last summer, I tried to snag a seat at the bustling bar in its elegant Art Deco space. Unfortunately, there was a wait. The staff kindly guided us to the Moon Room bar upstairs, which had a nice vibe but felt a bit empty that night.
Now transformed into Bar Benjamin, this space showcases stylish decor, complete with lush green velvet and vintage lights. The atmosphere has really improved since its early days.
Two talented bartenders, Chad Austin and Jason Lee, whip up cocktails that reflect the diverse food culture of Los Angeles. For instance, the Last Laugh cocktail combines mezcal with saffron, pineapple, and mango. If you’re feeling adventurous, try the Gibson, which has a unique twist inspired by an everything bagel.
During my visit, the cozy ambiance made it a place I wouldn’t mind enjoying alone or with friends.
Fusion Kitchen
At Fusion Kitchen in Mid-Wilshire, I savored a warm, comforting borscht. This light broth, mixed with tender beef, tomatoes, and beets, feels perfect even in summer. Stir in some sour cream for a delightful touch. To accompany, you get rye bread and salo, which is traditional salt pork.
This spot used to be called Mom, Please, a well-loved Ukrainian restaurant. The name has changed, but the same family runs it. If you’re looking for unique flavors, the cabbage rolls and dumplings filled with potato are must-tries. For dessert, don’t miss out on the medovic, a honey cake that balances sweetness with a smoky flavor.
Manila Inasal
At Manila Inasal, I ordered a feast of Filipino delicacies, but I almost missed their signature dish! The bungus inasal, featuring milkfish marinated and grilled with achiote and citrusy calamansi, is exquisite. It’s served with two flavorful sauces that really enhance the dish.
The vegetable pancit, alongside tasty lumpia, is another highlight. You can also try the kare kare, which features ultra-tender beef. While I expected a bit more punch in the flavors, it was still satisfying.
Current Dining Trends
People are increasingly interested in diverse cuisines, a trend that continues to grow. According to a recent survey, over 70% of diners are seeking out new flavors and culinary experiences. This reflects our evolving food culture, influenced by global connections and social media trends.
In conclusion, whether you want cocktails, comforting Eastern European dishes, or vibrant Filipino flavors, these spots offer a little something for everyone. Enjoy your meals and the moments that come with them!
