The 2026 NFL Draft is done, and it was a whirlwind. Over three days, 805,000 fans watched as teams made 257 picks. Some teams struck gold, while others, like the Jaguars, struggled.
Let’s dive into how the draft classes stack up. The Raiders are at the top of my list. They snagged Fernando Mendoza, a quarterback with great potential. A team’s best quarterback often becomes its key player. On top of that, they picked Jermod McCoy in the fourth round. He was once viewed as a top-20 prospect, making him a major steal if he stays healthy.
Looking at historical trends, the first quarterback taken in a draft has a 40% chance of outshining their peers in the pros. In contrast, the success rate drops to just 13% for the second and third quarterbacks selected. The Rams’ Ty Simpson and the Cardinals’ Carson Beck fit into this less favorable category.
The Eagles made smart moves too. Their trade for Jonathan Greenard, a solid edge rusher, added depth to their squad. Plus, getting backup quarterback Cole Payton is a bonus. It’s easy to see why their general manager, Howie Roseman, earns so much respect in the league.
But not all teams fared well. The 49ers are ranked 31st in my evaluation. Their choice of receiver De’Zhaun Stribling at pick 33 raised eyebrows, as he was projected much lower. However, expert Dane Brugler pointed out that Stribling’s impressive speed and strong skills make him a valuable asset for the 49ers, fitting well into their offensive strategy.
On a lighter note, let’s talk about some fan predictions from the draft. A reader named Jeff T. correctly guessed a bold pick for the Bears and got a lot of buzz around it. He even predicted a trade that turned out right. It seems he’s one to watch!
Speaking of surprises, let’s discuss the undrafted players. Vanderbilt quarterback Diego Pavia made headlines by not being picked. He was the first Heisman runner-up to go undrafted since 2003. His outspoken nature may have turned some teams off, especially given his past association with Johnny Manziel.
Despite this, he’s the most notable undrafted free agent but by no means the best player available. Many prospects were quickly signed, leaving Pavia still searching for a team.
As we look ahead, it’ll be interesting to see how these rookies perform in the coming season. The draft can set the stage for great careers or lead to players fading into memory. The journey is just beginning.
