CHARLOTTE — Duke’s basketball team showed their strength once again, taking home the ACC Championship. Even without star player Cameron Boozer at his best and two key starters sidelined, the Blue Devils triumphed over Virginia 74-70.
Boozer, the ACC Player of the Year, went into the game struggling. He scored only 13 points and shot just 18% from the field. Virginia’s Ugonna Onyenso was a defensive powerhouse, blocking nine shots and making life difficult for Boozer. Despite his challenges, Boozer remained impactful, contributing eight assists and eight rebounds.
“It was a rough night, but my teammates picked me up,” Boozer said after receiving the tournament MVP award. He realized the importance of adapting and finding ways to help his team, even when his own game was off.
Duke coach Jon Scheyer praised Boozer for his resilience: “I’m spoiled. A 13-8-8 night is an off night for him.” It’s clear that Boozer has set high expectations, and his team has benefited from his steady performances throughout the season.
Meanwhile, Onyenso, who set a tournament record with 21 blocks, noted Boozer’s composure. “He didn’t let frustration affect his game. He kept going and supported his teammates,” Onyenso remarked.
Another takeaway from the championship was Duke’s depth. Missing starters Caleb Foster and Patrick Ngongba opened doors for others like Boozer’s twin brother, Cayden. He stepped up, matching his career-high with 16 points. This adaptability might be crucial as the team heads into the NCAA Tournament.
Duke’s bench also contributed significantly. Nikolas Khamenia had nine points and six rebounds, while Isaiah Evans led all scorers with 20 points. Their collective effort was vital in a game that featured numerous ties and lead changes, illustrating the intensity of the matchup.
Virginia’s Malik Thomas, who scored 18 points, acknowledged the fierce competition. “This was a tough matchup. We pushed them hard,” he said, indicating Virginia’s determination as they prepare for the upcoming March Madness.
Looking ahead, both teams understand the stakes. Duke feels the pressure from last year’s Final Four exit, while Virginia has unfinished business. Each team aims to prove themselves in the upcoming tournament, where the stakes are higher than ever.
