MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The No. 3 West Virginia University men’s soccer team is set to face Georgia State in Atlanta on Saturday, Oct. 18. The match kicks off at 7 p.m. at the GSU Soccer Complex and will be streamed on ESPN+. Fans can also access live stats on WVUsports.com.
This season, the Mountaineers boast an impressive 9-1-2 record. They recently won against American with a solid 2-0 score. Junior Pablo Pozos was the star, netting both goals. He now stands out as the leading scorer in the Sun Belt, sitting eighth nationally with ten goals. Other contributions came from senior Marcus Caldeira, junior Constantinos Christou, and senior Felix Ewald who assisted on the goals.
Defensively, graduate student Marc Bonnaire has been formidable in goal, recording two saves against American, including a crucial penalty kick stop. This marked his sixth shutout of the season. In their last four outings, the Mountaineers’ defense has allowed just one goal, facing only six shots on target.
Caldeira is also making waves in the Sun Belt, leading the league with seven assists and ranking tenth nationally. Both Pozos and Caldeira have accumulated 21 points this season, placing them at the top of their conference and twelfth in NCAA standings.
Currently, West Virginia leads the Sun Belt with a perfect 4-0-0 record, earning 12 points, three ahead of rivals Marshall and Kentucky.
On the other side, Georgia State, under 16th-year head coach Brett Surrency, holds a 3-4-5 overall record and is 1-1-2 within the conference. Samir Djeha is their top performer with six goals and four assists. Goalkeeper Loan Marin has been instrumental, making 45 saves this season.
This match not only holds importance for standings in the Sun Belt but also showcases a clash of talent and strategy. As the Mountaineers aim to maintain their first-place position, fans are eager to see if they can continue their winning streak against the Panthers.
