When I went vegan at 35, giving up cheese felt daunting. I had enjoyed everything from sharp cheddar to creamy brie for years. But after five years of trying various vegan cheeses, I found some that might just impress you, too.
Recently, I hosted a blind taste test with my friends. We sampled fifteen vegan cheeses, judging them on flavor, texture, and whether we would buy them again. Here’s what we discovered:
Miyoko’s Creamery Classic Chive took the top prize. Made from cashews and fermented, it has a delightful tang that even non-vegans loved. The rich texture spreads perfectly on crusty bread. It may be pricier, but it’s worth it for special occasions.
Next up, Violife Epic Mature Cheddar proved to be fantastic for everyday use. It has a sharp, nutty flavor that shines in sandwiches and burgers. What impressed us most was how well it melted—perfect for grilled cheese or quesadillas.
If you’re craving Italian, Kite Hill Ricotta is a game changer. It’s almond-based, light, and a bit sweet, making it ideal for dishes like lasagna or on toast with honey. Simple ingredients—just almonds, salt, and cultures—make it a refreshing choice.
Follow Your Heart Smoked Gouda sparked mixed feelings. Some loved the smoke, while others found it too strong. I’m a fan; it adds a rich depth to mac and cheese and works well on apple slices or pretzels.
Then there’s Treeline Classic Aged Nut Cheese. This one undergoes actual aging, resulting in a firm texture and complex flavor that stands out on a cheese board. It’s perfect for impressing guests and pairs nicely with olives and nuts.
For pizza lovers, Daiya Cutting Board Mozzarella has improved significantly. It melts beautifully, creating that stretchy layer we all want. Unlike past options, it doesn’t turn greasy or separate.
Finally, Boursin Dairy-Free Garlic and Herbs pleasantly surprised me. This mainstream brand nailed the flavor, making it ideal for bagels and pastas. It’s easily found at regular stores, which is a big plus.
What struck me during our taste test was how far vegan cheese has come. Five years ago, I might have said to skip cheese substitutes altogether. Now, I appreciate these cheeses for what they are.
When choosing vegan cheese, consider the right type for your dish. Whether it’s Miyoko’s for a gathering or Daiya for pizza, the key is to enjoy them as unique options rather than expecting them to mimic dairy cheese exactly.
Curious about which vegan cheese to try? You might be surprised by how delicious they can be!
