A tornado struck Lena, Illinois, around 4:45 p.m. CT on Friday, causing significant damage but, thankfully, no serious injuries or fatalities. This tornado was part of a larger storm system making its way toward Chicago.
The National Weather Service issued a warning shortly before the tornado touched down. A video from the scene showed the terrifying funnel cloud swirling down toward the town. Residents reported substantial destruction, with downed trees and power lines blocking roads. The local sheriff’s office cautioned people to stay away, emphasizing that emergency crews needed clear access to assist those affected.
Sheriff Steve Stovall expressed relief that no one was injured. “We are fortunate that this storm didn’t lead to loss of life,” he noted. He confirmed that response teams were on-site, working to secure the area and assist residents.
As conditions worsened, Governor J.B. Pritzker assured citizens that the Illinois Emergency Management Agency was coordinating help in Lena. His message urged residents to heed local safety guidelines.
Visuals from the town showed trees snapped and laying across streets. One resident, Rich, described seeing the funnel cloud forming, adding, “It was clear something dangerous was coming.” Another nearby resident, Marcia, fled to her basement with her dog when the tornado hit. “When I heard a crash, I thought the roof was gone, but it was just a tree falling outside,” she recounted.
As evening set in, community members rallied together, clearing debris and helping each other. Kenneth Quinn shared, “The community jumped right in to support those affected.”
In addition, two schools in the area, which had students inside, also experienced damage. Reports indicated that part of the roof was compromised, but no injuries were reported. School officials are expected to provide updates on the damage soon.
