Toronto is gearing up for some tricky weather on Tuesday. Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement alerting residents to expect several hours of freezing rain. This could lead to one to two millimeters of ice accumulating on surfaces, making roads and walkways slippery.
The freezing rain is set to begin in the morning and taper off in the afternoon. During this time, surfaces might become dangerously icy, and it could be hard to notice just how slick they are. There’s also a chance of local utility outages.
As temperatures rise above freezing, this freezing rain may mix with snow or ice pellets, eventually transitioning to plain rain. Areas along the shorelines of Lake Erie and Lake Ontario might not see as much ice buildup.
Interestingly, this icy weather follows a snowfall warning that was just lifted. Earlier on Monday, Environment Canada had predicted up to 10 centimeters of snow, which was expected to ease by the afternoon.
