It was meant to be just another Thursday in Laos when Anthonin, a 30-year-old Frenchman, found himself on a ferry filled with over 140 people. This ferry was making its usual trip down the Mekong River from Huay Xay to Luang Prabang. Suddenly, disaster struck. The ferry capsized, and chaos erupted.
Videos shared online captured the frantic moments: people crying out for help and scrambling to save their belongings. Anthonin vividly recalls a mother with her two children, but sadly, they didn’t make it to safety.
Lao media later reported the heartbreaking discovery of Pany Her’s body and that of her one-year-old child. Rescuers are still searching for her older child.
When the ferry hit underwater rocks, it started sinking fast. According to an official report from the Laotian Times, there were 118 tourists and 29 locals on board. Anthonin mentioned how unprepared the crew seemed, noting the lack of life jackets—only about 15 were available for everyone on the ferry.
British tourist Bradley Cook described the scene as terrifying, adding that as a rescue boat approached, passengers shifted unexpectedly, causing the vessel to sink even quicker. Many scrambled to get to the rescue boat, some even swimming to reach it. Anthonin helped others while juggling fear for the missing mother and children.
This incident shines a light on safety concerns in Laos, especially for tourists. Each year, tens of thousands travel the scenic 300 km route along the Mekong, relying on these ferry services. According to the Mekong River Commission, it’s a popular route, but safety measures often fall short.
Anthonin said, “I was not afraid for my life, but my heart goes out to those who are missing.” His sentiments echo a broader worry about safety in tour operations within the region.
Remember, incidents like this aren’t isolated. Just months before, another ferry capsized in the same stretch of water, claiming three lives when it became tangled in a fishing net.
