Tragedy in Kyiv: One Dead, 33 Injured in Devastating Missile and Drone Attack; Rescue Efforts Underway for Those Trapped

Explosions shook Kyiv on the night of May 14, 2026, as Russia launched a massive attack involving missiles and drones. One person was killed, and 33 were injured in the chaos, according to Tymur Tkachenko, head of the Kyiv City Military Administration.

Emergency workers rushed to a collapsed apartment building in a residential area, digging through the rubble to rescue those trapped. So far, they have freed 11 individuals. In nearby Kyiv Oblast, at least seven others were injured, including a child.

The assault included a staggering 56 missiles and 675 drones. Ukraine’s Air Force reported that they managed to intercept 29 cruise missiles and a significant number of drones before they could do further damage.

The attack began just before 1 a.m., prompting a nationwide alert. First responders in Kyiv heard explosions as air defenses engaged the incoming threats. In the Darnytskyi district, parts of a residential building came crashing down, trapping people inside.

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko confirmed that 18 apartments were destroyed in the attack. “The sense of shock was overwhelming,” said witness Tivan Khachatryan. “We felt a deep emptiness inside.” His friend, Karolina Koshletska, expressed her grief, noting the tragedy for their country.

The attack disrupted water services in eastern Kyiv, added Mayor Klitschko. Debris from downed drones caused fires in various districts, affecting cars and buildings alike.

This assault came after a day filled with drone strikes across Ukraine, where over 800 drones targeted both military and civilian infrastructure. These attacks resulted in at least 14 deaths and over 80 injuries, including children.

President Volodymyr Zelensky warned of escalating attacks, indicating that Russia aims to cause as much destruction as possible, potentially overwhelming Ukrainian air defenses. Intelligence reports suggest that missile strikes are likely to follow such drone waves, targeting critical infrastructure.

Historically, these tactics echo past wartime strategies, where simultaneous attacks on multiple fronts aimed to reduce defenses and create panic among civilians. As of now, the ongoing conflict continues to affect daily life in Ukraine, leaving many in fear and uncertainty about what’s next.
