At least 18 people have died and over 10 others are injured in a stampede at a railway station in New Delhi. This tragedy occurred as large crowds rushed to board trains heading to the Maha Kumbh Mela, the world’s largest religious gathering.
The chief minister of Delhi, Atishi, was the first to announce the death toll. Many of the deceased were women and children. The bodies were taken to Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Narain Hospital in the city.
The incident took place around 8 p.m. local time on two platforms as passengers awaited trains to Prayagraj, where the festival is held. Earlier reports had indicated 15 fatalities, which were later revised. Hospital officials noted that most victims did not show open wounds, suggesting they might have died from asphyxiation or minor injuries, pending further examination.
Indian Defense Minister Rajnath Singh expressed his sorrow on social media, stating he was “extremely pained” by the loss of life. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also shared his distress and offered prayers for the recovery of the injured. He added that the authorities are providing help to those affected.
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced an investigation to determine the cause of the stampede. In the meantime, Indian Railways has promised compensation of about €11,000 for the families of those who died, and varying amounts for the injured.
Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi criticized the government, calling the incident a significant failure of the railways. He highlighted the need for better planning, especially given the expected influx of pilgrims during the festival. Gandhi insisted that no one should lose their life due to negligence in managing such large events.
This is not the first serious incident at the Kumbh Mela. Just last month, a stampede during the festival claimed at least 30 lives when millions of participants gathered to bathe in sacred waters.
