The recent Black-Eyed Susan day at Laurel Park turned tragic when Hit Zero, a horse ridden by Irad Ortiz Jr., collapsed shortly after the race.
Dr. Dionne Benson, the Chief Veterinary Officer at Laurel Park, explained that Hit Zero began coughing, went down on his knees, and then fell. While this behavior can indicate heart issues, Dr. Benson noted that there is no immediate evidence of such a problem.
A full necropsy is planned to find out the exact cause of Hit Zero’s death. This grim event is a stark reminder of the risks in horse racing. Laurel Park had to host the Black-Eyed Susan race this year due to renovations at Pimlico, its usual venue.
Sadly, Laurel Park has a history of incidents involving horse fatalities. In 2019, another horse, Congrats Gal, collapsed and died during the Miss Preakness Stakes. Previous years have also seen multiple tragic cases; in 2016, Homeboykris, a surprise winner, collapsed after his race, and Pramedya suffered a broken leg and was euthanized soon after.
Statistics from 2021 reported that horse racing in the U.S. faced increasing scrutiny due to safety concerns, with 706 racehorse fatalities documented that year alone, according to the Jockey Club. The growing awareness of equine welfare is leading to debates about safety reforms in numerous racing jurisdictions.
