Tragic Accident Claims NMU Student’s Life: University Honors Him with Flag Ceremony

MARQUETTE – Jackson Gervasio, a 21-year-old Northern Michigan University student, tragically lost his life in an accident in Knoxville, Tennessee, on July 5. He was studying construction management and was about to enter his senior year.

Jackson was an active member of the NMU Constructors organization and volunteered for Women in Construction events. This summer, he was interning at Kokosing Construction in Virginia. His professors described him as a vibrant, energetic individual who truly embraced life.

In his memory, NMU plans to lower the campus flag on a date chosen by his family. They will keep the community informed about this tribute.

“Our thoughts are with Jackson’s family and friends, as well as the NMU community navigating this loss,” said Rhea Dever, NMU’s Vice President for People, Culture, and Wellbeing. She encouraged those struggling with grief to utilize support resources available through the university.

A celebration of Jackson’s life will take place at Family Life Funeral Home in Sault Ste. Marie on Friday. Visitation is from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., followed by the funeral service at 1 p.m., and a luncheon afterward. Donations in his name can be made to local sports teams or the Construction Technology Program at Sault High, reflecting his passions.

“Jackson will be deeply missed, endlessly loved, and remembered for the joy he brought to those around him,” his obituary states.
