A woman fell overboard from the Royal Caribbean ship Explorer of the Seas on the first day of The 80s Cruise, which features beloved bands like Squeeze, Adam Ant, and Tiffany.
She was identified as Kimberly Burch, the fiancée of Faster Pussycat lead singer Taime Downe. Reports suggest the incident may have occurred after an argument with Downe, but it’s not clear if she fell accidentally or jumped. Her mother, Carnell Burch, expressed doubt that her daughter would intentionally harm herself.
In a heartfelt Facebook post, the family shared that Kimberly would be missed dearly and asked for support during this tragic time.
Witnesses on board confirmed a search operation began shortly after Kimberly went overboard around 11 p.m. on a Sunday night. The ship continued its journey while the U.S. Coast Guard took over the search, leaving many unsure of what had happened.
Royal Caribbean issued a statement, mentioning their crew launched a search and is helping the victim’s family. They also asked for privacy for the family during this difficult moment.
One passenger recounted the events, mentioning that Squeeze was performing when an announcement stated someone had gone overboard. The ship stopped, and safety boats were deployed to search the area while other nearby vessels joined in the effort.
Social media users shared updates, with one stating they witnessed the announcement and described the scene. Another noted that this was the first time they had encountered such a situation on a cruise.
The 80s Cruise is known for its lively atmosphere, which celebrates the music and culture of the 1980s. Upcoming lineups feature popular artists from that era and over 50 concerts take place throughout the week-long cruise, which sails from Miami and visits Nassau, San Juan, and Puerto Plata.
