Police and the FBI responded to an active shooter report near Emory University and the CDC in Atlanta on Friday evening. Thankfully, they confirmed that there was no ongoing threat, and the shooter is deceased. One law enforcement officer was injured during the incident.
Earlier, Emory University had warned students to “RUN, HIDE, FIGHT” and stay clear of the area. Shortly after this alert, they announced that the “shelter-in-place” order was lifted, but advised everyone to continue avoiding the vicinity.
Witnesses reported hearing shots near the Emory Point CVS, close to both the university and the CDC. Some CDC employees mentioned that bullets hit windows on their campus, with images of shattered glass circulating on social media, highlighting the severity of the situation.
Georgia Governor Brian Kemp expressed his concern, noting that “deranged criminals have targeted innocent Georgians” twice in one week, referencing this incident and a mass shooting at Fort Stewart. He emphasized the bravery of first responders and called for prayers for those affected.
Brandy Giraldo, COO of a nearby deli, recounted the fear of her staff as they heard gunshots, describing it as sounding like fireworks.
