Three police officers tragically lost their lives in a gas explosion at a farmhouse in northern Italy. This incident occurred near Verona while local police and firefighters were attempting to execute an eviction order involving three siblings.
The blast, which could be heard miles away, heavily damaged the farmhouse. Images show the building reduced to rubble. As the situation unfolded, authorities arrested two individuals at the scene, and a man who fled was located shortly after. All three are now hospitalized.
Initially, the farmhouse owners faced eviction due to significant debts. Luca Zaia, the head of the Veneto region, noted that past attempts had failed because the siblings resisted the eviction. Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi mentioned that mediators were sent to negotiate with the barricaded siblings. However, when the Carabinieri arrived early in the morning, it appears that one of the siblings ignited the explosion.
Police commander Claudio Papagno described the explosion as an “act of absolute madness.” Fire officials also found petrol bombs on-site, raising serious concerns about the firefighters and officers’ safety. Among the injured were 11 other Carabinieri members, three state police, and a firefighter.
The farmhouse was in a dilapidated condition and lacked basic utilities. Raffaele Tito, the local prosecutor, stated that preliminary investigations indicate premeditated actions by the siblings, including the likelihood of opening gas cylinders just before the blast.
Neighbors reported a tense atmosphere, recalling that the siblings had once threatened to “blow themselves up” rather than vacate the premises. The explosion has left a significant emotional toll on the community. Defense Minister Guido Crosetto acknowledged the sacrifice of the officers, while calls for justice emerge from this heartbreaking event.
In recent studies, house evictions in Italy have been rising, often leading to confrontations. A survey by the Italian National Institute of Statistics (ISTAT) found that in 2021 alone, over 40,000 eviction orders were issued, reflecting broader economic struggles in the country. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the escalating tensions surrounding housing insecurity in Italy.
